In the late 90s and early 2000s, I was one of those girls that bought into the whole boyband scene. I was completely obsessed with the music, the merchandise, and Lance Bass’ terrible dance moves. Aside from cds and concert tickets, I spent my money on a wide assortment of totally ridiculous things, from magazines and posters to the more outrageous quilts and marionette dolls. If there had been makeup, I would have purchased it in a heartbeat.
With a resurgence in popularity for boybands, the newer groups are marketing a wide variety of items to appeal to their fans. One of those bands, One Direction, has inspired a makeup collection from Markwins. The only thing I know about 1D is that one of the members briefly dated Taylor Swift, but when I saw the opportunity on Brandbacker to review this collection, I knew I wanted to give it a try. After all, I’m a boyband lover at heart. (*NSYNC will always be the best.)
There are three different collections available, each representing albums from the band. I received the Midnight Memories Collection; others include Up All Night and Take Me Home. Each collection retails for $28.50 and can be purchased at retailers such as Macy’s, Stage Stores, Dillard’s, Lord and Taylor, and Beauty Brands. They are available now in the United States, with an international release to follow.
Each collection comes in a collectible tin and includes seven items.
- 4+1 Eye Shadow Palette (Shades: Little White Lies, Don’t Forget Where You Belong, Half a Heart, Strong, and Midnight Memories)
- “Little Black Dress” volumizing mascara
- “Right Now” metallic nail polish
- “Through the Dark” lip gloss (glows neon red-orange under UV light)
- “Best Song Ever” red lipstick
- “Better than Words” black eye and body crayon
Each item in the collection maintains the brick-theme design of the outer tin. The eyeshadow was packaged in a plastic container, but felt fairly sturdy and included a dual-ended applicator.
I found the colors to be smooth, although the peach seemed a little more powdery than the others. The pigmentation was good, the colors reminding me a lot of Silent Treatment by Wet ‘n’ Wild. The only color that was a little disappointing was the lightest shade, barely seen in the bottom of the photo above. I really like the glitter cream, but it wouldn’t be something I would use often. Maybe a night out.
Unfortunately, my lipstick was when opened. It got a little smashed against the cap, but that’s not a big issue. I found the lipstick to be smooth and easy to apply. The red was highly pigmented and stained my hand when I swatched it.
Even though I didn’t see it under UV light, the gloss was my favorite item. I liked the hot pink sparkles. I also thought it looked nice when layered on top of the red lipstick.
I didn’t wear the mascara because I plan to pass this kit along to a cousin that is a big One Direction fan. The brush was just standard synthetic bristles, like most common mascaras. The chubby crayon didn’t seem to dry when I swatched it, so if using it as an eye product, it would probably have better staying power if the darkest shadow was used to set it. For younger girls and teens, this is probably a good introductory eyeliner. It can also be used to fill in the included stencils.
My favorite was really the nail polish. Gunmetal is one of my favorite nail colors and I liked this version.
Obviously, I’m not quite the intended consumer for a product like, but I think teens and young women that are fans of the band will really enjoy this collection.
